Using abbreviations in reference data

The following rules have been adopted for using abbreviations in referene templates.

Journal Abbreviation

  • Generally journal abbreviations use no fullstop; so we have placed a fullstop in the reference template to punctuate the end of the data field (if required)
  • If you want fullstops in your Journal Abbreviation, add them to the resource data, but check to see if there are any duplicated fullstops on the last component. If yes, remove it from the resource.
    • Jnl. Abbrev. : this could cause double fullstops when a fullstop is required at the end of the datafield
    • Jnl. Abbrev   : if there are double fullstops, remove the last fullstop in your resource entry

Place/Location Abbreviation

  • Generally, the abbreviation for a place of publication could be a state with no fullstops; so we have placed a fullstop in the reference template to punctuate the end of the data field (if required)
  • If you want fullstops in your Place Abbreviation, add them to the resource data, but check to see if there are any duplicated fullstops on the last component. If yes, remove it from the resource.
    • Burlington, Vermont is abbreviated to Burliington, VT
    • Sydney, Australia is abbreviated to Syd, Aus

Publisher Abbreviation

  • Generally, the abbreviation for a publisher is the main word; so we have placed a fullstop in the reference template to punctuate the end of the data field (if required)
  • If you want fullstops in your Publisher Abbreviation, add them to the resource data, but check to see if there are any duplicated fullstops on the last component. If yes, remove it from the resource.
    • Footprint Publishing Co. is abbreviated to Footprint

Legal abbreviations

  • Court Abbreviation
  • Forum Abbreviation
  • Jurisdiction Abbreviation

Legal abbreviations may or may not use fullstops; so we assumed that the last part of an abbreivation has no fullstop.

If it is a requirement that the end of the data field be punctuated by a fullstop, we have placed the fullstop in the reference template.

If your reference comes out with duble fullstops, it is becuase (a) you have added a fullstop to the end of your abbreviation, and (b) we have added a fullstop at the end of a datafield. In this situation, you will need to remove the last fullstop from the resource data field.
