Using an apostrophe

Apostrophe (contraction)

  • Insert an apostrophe (') when a letter is missing (i.e., the word is being contracted); for example, can't, shan't, won't, shouldn't, don't, 'n',

Apostrophe (possession)
  • Insert an apostrophe to indicate ownership; for example, Peter's dog bit the postman!
  • Except, when the owner's name ends in s (e.g., Peters), then put the apostrophe at the end; for example, Peters' dog bit the postman!
