Books: getting your references right

Mandatory data

  • Book title
  • Contributor (see below)
  • Publication identifiers:
    • Year published (found on the copyright page)
    • Date accessed (if found online or in a database)
    • Publisher name (found on the title page)
    • Place of publication for the publisher (always enter: Country, City)
  • Source (see below)

 

Contributors

The people (or organizations) that have compiled the book. 

  • Author
  • Editor
  • Translator
  • Editor & Translator (not yet added)
  • Reviewer (not yet added)
  • Compiler (not yet added)

If you do not know the Author name you should leave it blank. If the book has been sourced from the internet, you can always add the website owner as the Author (organization).

If the Author is an organization, add an abbreviation (if applicable).

 

Complete Books

Format Description Format-specific data
Authored book The entire work has been compiled by the same Author list. 
  • Contributor = Author

Book volume in series An authored volume or an edited volume, but there are a series of books that make the complete collection.
  • Contributor = Volume Editor
  • Contributor = Series Editor
  • Contributor = Multi-Volume Editor
  • Series title and abbreviation (if available)
  • Series number (if available)
  • Multi-volume title and abbreviation (if available)
  • Volume number (if available)
  • Number of volumes in the series (if available)
Classic work A book that is considered exemplary, noteworthy, or is commonly known. 
  • Contributor = Author
  • Contributor = Volume Editor
  • Contributor = Series Editor
  • Contributor = Multi-Volume Editor
  • Contributor = Volume Editor
  • Contributor = Series Editor
  • Contributor = Multi-Volume Editor
Edited book A book edited by a number of Editors. Each section in the book (e.g., a chapter) is usually compiled by different Authors. The table of contents will list the Authors for each chapter.

Parts of a Book

Dictionary entry A short entry found in a dictionary; e.g. a definition.
  • Contributor = Author

  • Entry number (if available)
Encyclopedia entry A long entry found in a dictionary, glossary or anthology; e.g., the Cambridge dictionary of philosophy.
  • Contributor = Author of the entry
  • Contributor = Editor of the book
  • Entry number (if available)
Section or chapter in book  Typically, a chapter within an edited book. 
  • Section title
  • Book title
  • Contributor = Author of the section
  • Contributor = Editor of the book
  • Year published for the section (add the book year published if it is not provided)
  • Page from & Page to for the section
Section or chapter in book volume  Typically, a chapter within an edited volume. 
  • Section title
  • Book title
  • Contributor = Author of the section
  • Contributor = Editor of the volume
  • Contributor = Multi-Volume Editor (if available)
  • Year published for the section (add the book year published if it is not provided)

Mandatory data; if available

  • Publication identifiers:
    • Edition (only add this if it is 2nd, 3rd, etc.)
    • Number of pages
  • Descriptors:
    • Type of book (e.g., textbook)
    • Short title (as an alternative to the book name)

Optional data

This data is always wise to enter:

  • Descriptors:
    • Type (e.g., textbook, novel)
  • Publication identifiers
    • Format (e.g., e-book, Pdf, kindle)
    • ISBN

All other data fields are optional, but it is always wise to add as much as you can at the time you first add the reference as it can often be difficult to find the data at a later date.

  

Source

Where someone can find a copy of the book.

  • Hardcopy (softcover or hardcover) usually found in a library. 
  • Online; that is, the book can be acquired online. Include this data:
    • Url location (add the full address starting with http://)
    • Website name and owner
    • Add the Doi, if available
  • Database (ie., downloaded); that is, it can be acquired from a database. Include this data:
    • Database name
    • Database provider
    • Database identifier (i.e., a number associated with the book)
